Silk flower artist

July Volodarska

My name is Yulia. I live and work in Ukraine. I have a professional art education and a diploma from a Japanese school of silk flower making.

I create silk flowers using the traditional Japanese technique — entirely by hand, from the first petal to the final assembly. Each stage — cutting, dyeing, shaping with heated tools, and assembling the flower — is a slow, almost meditative process.

I work both on individual commissions and with brands, constantly exploring new forms, techniques, and materials.

On this website, you can discover a selection of my works created over different periods of time and place a custom order.

The process

How each flower is made

I create flowers using the traditional Japanese silk flower technique. Each petal goes through a long journey — from white fabric to a finished flower with its own unique shape and tone. It is a slow, almost meditative process where every detail matters.

Step 01
Hand Cutting
Each element is cut entirely by hand using my original templates. No two pieces are exactly alike.
Step 02
Hand Dyeing
The fabric is dyed with Japanese aniline dyes. I mix colours and carefully select tones to create complex artistic colour combinations.
Step 03
Tool Shaping
The petals are shaped using heated tools, giving the flower volume and sculptural form that feels alive.
Step 04
Final Assembly
In search of harmony and the perfect composition, I assemble each flower petal by petal, completing it with leaves, stems, and decorative elements.
Materials

What I work with

Silk and fabric
I work primarily with Japanese silk, organza, velvet, and other professional fabrics used in traditional silk flower making. Each material is selected for the way it holds shape, colour, and texture after hand processing.
Fabric dyes
The fabric is dyed by hand using Japanese aniline dyes. By mixing colours and layering tones, I create complex shades unique to each flower.
Shaping tools
Traditional heated tools are used to shape every petal individually. This process gives the flower volume, structure, and sculptural form.
